Title: The Beverly Lewis
Amish Heritage Cookbook
Author: Beverly Lewis
Publisher: Bethany House
ISBN: 0-7642-2917-6
Genre: Nonfiction/Cookbook
Take a pinch of kitchen hints and add in some Amish lore. Stir in a few
poems and scriptures. Mix in several touching personal notes from Beverly
Lewis, along with some excerpts from her books and family anecdotes, and
you have the Beverly Lewis Amish Heritage Cookbook.
Ms. Lewis has collected over two hundred recipes and filed them under
thirteen headings, such as, Breakfast Specialty Dishes, Breads, Main
Dishes, and Puddings and Custards.
I discovered old-fashioned recipes for items like corn fritters and corn
meal mush-things I remember my grandma making. There are also Amish Bread
Starter and Weepless Pie Meringue recipes, as well as more modern recipes
like Baked Granola Bars and ones that contain canned soups as an
ingredient. Then there are recipes for
things I've never heard of before, such as, Marbled Mashed Potatoes or
Indiana Shoofly Pie.
Besides finding delicious recipes in Ms. Lewis's cookbook, readers will
enjoy her little tidbits like: A fat wife and a big barn never did a
farmer harm. She also makes personal comments on specific recipes,
sometimes giving you a small glimpse into her life. Many recipes have been
updated from the old way of doing things when women measured by feel and
taste instead of using measuring cups and spoons. All in all, the
Beverly Lewis Amish Heritage Cookbook is a great one to keep in your
kitchen cabinet or to give as a gift to a friend.
