Title: Pursuit & Persuasion Author: Sally S. Wright Publisher: Multnomah ISBN: 1-576-73416-1 Genre: Inspirational/Mystery
Not even a month has past since Dr. Ben Reese solved two previous murders while in Scotland. Now the archivist from an American university finds his services once again needed.
Georgina Fletcher, a mild-mannered Scottish professor and heiress of a tire-manufacturing empire, dies unexpectedly and presumably by food poisoning. But there's something rotten in Scotland! The day before her death seemingly by "natural causes," Georgina leaves a letter with a friend to be delivered to her "niece" only upon her death.
The "niece" is none other than Ellen, Ben's apprentice at Alderton University! Not one to accuse someone of misdeeds without absolute proof, Georgina leaves few clues to her would-be killer's identity.
But by using his skill as an archivist as well as his military intelligence background, Ben discovers who the killer is, but not before an attempt is made on his own life. Set in Scotland, a land rich with both historic treachery and beauty, Wright vividly stages her tale in the deceptively more civilized 1960's.
The third book in the "Ben Reese Mystery Series" Pursuit & Persuasion , keeps the reader guessing as to the killer's identity and what the motive might be. Is it Georgina's husband's unethical nephew who wants her to sell Fletcher Tire to their biggest competitor? Perhaps the culprit is a colleague whose professional jealousy shows no bounds. Is Ellen herself suspect since she stood to inherit everything and failed to mention that she was in Oxford the day Georgina dies? Eccentric neighbors and hired help do not escape Dr. Reese's scrutiny, nor do hidden wrongs in centuries past.
An engaging and exciting book, Pursuit & Persuasion is a must read for all those interested in curling up with a classic mystery novel.
