Desiree Jacobs knows art—and she knows business security. Her father’s security company is internationally renowned, and Desiree knows all his secrets. She’s upset when Special Agent Tony Lucano seems to be intent on destroying her father’s good name by accusing him of stealing valuable pieces of art. Hiram Jacobs is not a thief.

When Hiram is murdered on a business trip, Tony breaks the news to Desiree. But later that night, someone attacks her in her home. S.W.A.T. arrives just in time to save Desiree’s life. Tony is convinced that Desiree knows something. But what? And is Desiree as innocent as Tony would like to believe, or is she involved in the art thefts too?

Reluctant Burglar is the debut novel by talented author Jill Elizabeth Nelson. It starts out a little slow which disappointed me, as it was a book I’d looked forward to reading, but before I made it through the first three chapters I was hooked and had to keep reading.

Desiree wants to appear tough and capable in her business world, but when disaster hit, she becomes vulnerable. She wants to work with the FBI until she discovers some secrets, but then she isn’t sure who to trust. The murderer seems to have eyes and ears everywhere. Her every move seems to be known and she is receiving messages in unusual places, indicating someone knows her patterns.

The faith message is expertly woven in, and the characters are realistically developed. I couldn’t put Reluctant Burglar down and look forward to reading more books in the To Catch a Thief series. Reluctant Runaway is due out in March 2007 and I’ll be first in line to get it. Discussion questions are included at the end of the book. Don’t miss Reluctant Burglar. $12.99. 340 pages.
