Title: Sand Pebbles Genre: Inspirational/Women/Fiction Since her husband's death two years ago, March Longfellow has managed her grief by keeping busy. March maintains a tight control over her son Mason, her newspaper business, her job as a travel writer, and her role as a pastor's daughter. As long as she stays busy, she doesn't have time to think about Joe's mysterious death and his failed business, or the fact that they had a vicious argument just before his fateful accident. March presses on, pushing down feelings of guilt and inadequacy. To make matters worse, her mother-in-law is pressing March to give back a valuable section of land adjoining the Longfellow's family estate and land that is Mason's inheritance. Now March's father has gone behind her back and invited a guest pastor, Colin Arnett, to visit their church. March is shocked that her father is considering resigning as pastor. Instead of being the congenial hostess March normally is, she reacts by giving Pastor Arnett and his family the cold shoulder. When the Pastor's family leaves quickly after the Sunday service, March's guilt gets the better of her. In her effort to make amends, March gets to know Colin Arnett and realizes he understands her pain. As a widower, he reaches out to her in a way no one else has. March feels the sparks of something more, but is she ready to relinquish the tight control she has on her life and allow Colin to be a part of it? Patricia Hickman has poured her heart into this dramatic story. March and Colin deal with grief in different ways. Readers who have experienced deep grief will be able to relate to these realistic characters. The secondary characters, especially Jerry, the rat man, and Charlotte, Colin's handicapped daughter, and March's stubborn father, add extra depth to this moving story. Readers with a penchant for action-oriented books may get bogged down in March's day-to-day activities that make Sand Pebbles so realistic. Sand Pebbles is a faith-stirring tale of grief and healing. | |
