Title: The Scent of Lilacs Author: Ann H. Gabhart Publisher: Revell ISBN: 0-8007-3080-1 Genre: Inspirational/Fiction It’s the summer of 1964 and thirteen-year-old Jocie is about to learn more family secrets than she ever thought possible: her gentle father David, pastor of this small-town church, eccentric Aunt Love, and the quirky “Jupiterian” named Wes. The Scent of Lilacs is very much character-driven. This is a charming story about a family, love, and friendship—it’s where all the skeletons are unburied over the course of one warm summer. What is love? What is family? How are the strangest of friendships formed? In one summer, there is pain, reconciliation, and growing up. The book reminded me mildly of Janette Oke books, actually: stories from the past about the lives of everyday people and the trials they face in silence. Gabhart unveils her characters’ pasts with a steady hand and draws heavily on the intimate relationships between them. | |
