Nineteen-year-old Honor McCall’s beloved aunt has just died, and her drunkard Uncle Lucas has now demanded that Honor marry him in the morning. Honor is horrified at the thought and knows she must escape. When Uncle Lucas passes out from his alcohol, Honor takes off, hoping to make it to the nearest big town and find work. Finding sanctuary overnight in a local church, Honor steals money from the offertory and uses that to pay for her carriage fare.

Minister Jethro Peters is on the carriage and when bandits rob it, he takes Honor under his care. Unfortunately, Honor didn’t listen to him and the bandits hit her, knocking her unconscious.  Jeth takes her to his mother’s nearby boarding house, nursing Honor back to health and later offering her a job.

Honor is content in the small town she landed in, but she is having bad dreams and is continuously fearful her uncle will find her, especially when she learns that Uncle Lucas has followed her and is offering a $30.00 reward for her return. Honor fears she has no choice but to continue on the run. Will her uncle find her? Or will her new home provide an unexpected sanctuary?

Winter Pearl is set in 1888 Colorado. Honor is a feisty heroine, determined to take anyone on who stands in her way. Jethro is a caring minister, determined to go the extra mile.

Some of the things in Winter Pearl bothered me, like pushing church membership in lieu of salvation. Otherwise, Winter Pearl is an adorable story, with loveable characters, and it held my attention to the end. If you missed this book last year when it came out, now is a good time to pick it up. It is seriously heartwarming story. $12.95. 328 pages.
