Title: Wounded Healer Author: Donna Fleisher Publisher: Zondervan ISBN: 0-310-26394-8 Genre: Inspirational/Fiction
In 1996, Christine McIntyre wakes up in a cabin on Timmons trail in the San Juans of Colorado. The fire is out, her jacket and mittens gone. And from that simple beginning the story of Chris and her friend Erin Grayson-Mathis carries us from a violent present to memories of childhood to the hell of war and back to the present. Through it all the determined friendship of Erin shows the love of Christ to Chris who fears love.
Wounded Healer by Donna Fleisher is Book I in her Homeland Heroes Series. The heart- breaking tale told in Wounded Healer brings to the forefront how the past of one woman casts a shadow of conflict and even violence on those around her. At the same time, the story breaks down the story of redemption into easily understood fragments. With one exception (Dr. Scott Mathis, Erin’s husband) Fleisher’s characters are well drawn. Dr. Mathis remains shadowy, throughout. Even Fleisher’s villans are complex and layered.
Donna Fleisher, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and author of Wounded Healer writes with a down-to-earth clarity about women and men in the military. Her description of place is so sharp, the reader feels the cold in Colorado, and sees the crisp green in Oregon.
This reader recommends Wounded Healer. I received an e-mail from Donna Fleisher recently. She says Book II of Homeland Heroes, Warrior's Heart, is due to hit the stands in October. Chapter One of Warrior's Heart begins with Scott Mathis. Now, readers will find out if he’s strong, distracted or wimpy.
By the way, Fleisher says she’s hard at work on Book III. She lives on the Oregon coast. Lucky girl. |
