Christina McIntyre works for a search and rescue team in the Colorado mountains. But a routine check turns deadly when Christina doesn’t make it back to headquarters when expected. Her boyfriend, Travis, doesn’t wait for the required team of four to go looking for her, and he arrives on the scene to find Christina held captive by an escaped prisoner. Before help arrives, the fugitive kills Trevor and lunges for Christina. She is able to reach a gun and kill him. But this act of self-defense, along with the death of her boyfriend, sends Christina over the edge. She retreats to her remote mountain cabin and drinks herself into a stupor.

Erin Grayson is stunned when she hears that Christina has shot and killed someone. She knew Chris back when they were medics in Desert Shield, and knew how it devastated Chris when she had to kill then. Erin drops everything, leaving her husband, Scott, to rush to Colorado and hold Chris’s hand. But Chris is less than welcoming. Will Erin have the fortitude to reach her friend with Christ’s love? Or will Christina push her away and allow the whiskey to dull her pain and keep the demons at bay?

I couldn’t wait to read Wounded Healer. The cover is very intriguing, as well is the back-cover copy. But it took me some time to get into the story. I couldn’t relate at all to Chris because she is not my type of person. I wanted to tell her to “just deal, okay?” Erin is a true friend. Even though she only knew Chris a short time in a wartime situation, she is quick to go to her friend’s aid. Every woman could use a friend like Erin. Erin’s husband, Scott, truly loves his wife and wants the best for her, and her friendship with Chris has him more than a little concerned. The faith message is expertly woven in.

My only complaint is that the story seemed a bit disjointed at times. I would just be getting into a scene when it shifts time periods or characters, like a soap opera, and I would have to start over. The story didn’t flow well as a result. Still, it is a good read with some exciting moments. The second book in the series, Warrior’s Heart, has an excerpt at the rear of this book. $12.99. 310 pages.
