Radish Village - Two junior competitors in the annual Radish VillageSledding Extravaganza were injured yesterday when their sleds crashed
into an enormous oak tree.
Ten-year-old Harriet Vettian and eleven-year-old Geoffrey Theatate
attempted to gain a winning edge over the other 224 racers by taking a
different route down Suicide Hill. When their sleds hit ice, the
youngsters lost control and slammed broadside into a 300-year old oak.
The impact threw Vettian ten feet into a nearby snow bank, which
cushioned her fall. Theatate, however, hit his head and appeared dazed
and confused.
"My boy got the worst of it," said Matilda Theatate through her tears.
"When I asked if he was all right, he said, 'Asparagus, my Master!' My
son hates asparagus."
Paramedics transported both youngsters to Radish Village Regional
Hospital. Vettian was treated for minor injuries and released later
in the day. Theatate remains hospitalized with a concussion.
In a move to prevent further accidents, Mayor Posh LeMar ordered
crews to rope off the icy portions of Suicide Hill and post danger
signs.
The Sledding Extravaganza will continue over the next five days. The
grand prize winner will take home a trophy and a $50 gift certificate
to the store of their choice.
