Heroes: Hoot N. Owl and  Margaret Squirrel saved bank patrons during

a hold up today.  Bank  Manager Snowy A. Puffin promises a raise for

his two heroic tellers.

Ottercove - Fourteen members of the notorious Fox Gang sit behind bars today after an hour-long stand off with Ottercove County Sheriff’s Deputies in downtown Ottercove.

Deputies received a robbery call just after nine this morning. When they arrived at the Watercress National Bank, the deputies were greeted with gunfire from the Fox Gang.

Taking advantage of the Fox Gang's distraction with the deputies, quick-thinking teller, Margaret Squirrel gathered the hostages into the bank vault where they would be safe.

Hoot N. Owl, senior teller, set off the fire sprinklers just before shutting the vault door.

Once inside he called police on his cell phone to say the hostages were safe.

After deputies were certain the hostages were out of harm's way, they stormed the bank and captured all fourteen foxes.

"The Fox Gang members looked like drowned rats,” said Sheriff deputy, Robert Riverworth.  “The tellers did a magnificent job in protecting the hostages.”

“I did just what I could,” Hoot N. Owl stated when he was told he was a local hero. “Margaret was the real heroine. She quickly got everyone into the bankvaults while the Fox Gang wasn’t looking. She's quite a gal."

“I'm proud to have both Margaret and Hoot on my staff,” said Bank Manager Snowy A. Puffin.

“They're both heroes in my book. I'm putting them both in for a raise.”

Margaret Squirrel declined to talk to reporters. Co-workers stated the brave squirrel is a bit on the shy side when it comes to cameras and reporters. For more information on this case, go to www.wanted.ais.

Storm-Damaged Tree Collapses, Pins Small Puppy;

Wood Choppers To Face Charges of Negligence

A family photo of Spot Beagle before his accident.

Pompom Lake A falling tree near Pompom Lake trapped a small puppy this afternoon and caused severe injuries.

Spot Beagle, three years of age, was playing fetch with his older brother at 1:45 pm today when a damaged tree fell, trapping him.

Neighbors said workers had chopped away most of the tree's trunk a few days ago, but had not completed the task when a heavy thunderstorm forced them to stop. To everyone's surprise, the tree withstood the storm's fury. Workers had planned to return this afternoon to remove the tree, but didn't get back in time.

It took four hours for rescue workers to pull Spot from under the massive tree. Thankfully, the puppy had been knocked under a part of the tree that was held up by a large branch. Rescuers stated that there was barely one inch of space between the trunk and Spot.

Mrs. Wags Beagle stood and watched the rescue operations and prayed for the safety of her son. "I hope he's O.K.," she said, tears streaming down her face. "I had no idea the boys were out this far playing. I told them to stay in our yard."

Workers carefully lifted the tree with a crane, and paramedics placed Spot on a backboard and took him to Watercress Medical Center for treatment.

Dr. D. Smolder told officials that Spot is expected to live, but faces several months of recovery. Charges are expected to be filed against the wood choppers for negligence.

Get-well cards and donations to help the Wags Beagle family pay for Spot's medical expenses can be sent in care of the Cattown Medical Center.
